When Dhana Became Seva !

A Day of Dāna at Sri Trayee Vidya Gurukulam

In our previous reflections, we contemplated a simple but profound truth: the wealth that comes into our hands is not truly ours. It is entrusted to us by Sri Hari and becomes sacred when directed towards Dharma.
On 21 August 2026, this understanding took a tangible form.
With the grace of Sri Hari, Bhaktha Anjaneya Astrology Research and Seva Trust had the blessed opportunity to visit Sri Trayee Vidya Gurukulam in Srirangapatna, Karnataka, and offer educational materials to thirty young vidyārthis.
It was not merely a distribution of school supplies. It was a quiet meeting of Dhana, Dharma, Vidyā and Seva.
The Spiritual Significance of the Day
The day of our visit carried a beautiful significance in the Panchāṅga.
It was Śukravāra—Friday, a day traditionally associated with Mahālakṣmī, the Divine Mother who presides not merely over material wealth, but also over nourishment, auspiciousness, harmony and the resources required to sustain Dharma.
The day began under Anurādhā Nakṣatra, whose presiding deity is Mitra—the Vedic embodiment of friendship, goodwill and harmonious relationships. It seemed especially meaningful that donors, family members, elders, children, teachers and vidyārthis should come together on such a day in a shared spirit of Seva.
The Panchāṅga also marked Vaidhṛti Yoga. Although traditionally approached with discernment for worldly beginnings, such sacred periods are considered meaningful for inward-looking spiritual acts, prayer, Dāna and the accumulation of puṇya. What may not ordinarily be sought for material commencement can become deeply significant when devoted to humility, surrender and service.
Thus, the day gently reflected the purpose of the offering itself: wealth received through Mahālakṣmī’s grace, brought together through friendship and goodwill, and returned to Sri Hari through support for Vidyā and Vedic learning.
We had planned a humble offering. Only afterwards did we fully appreciate how beautifully the Panchāṅga of the day echoed its spiritual intent.
In the Presence of a Living Vedic Tradition
Sri Trayee Vidya Gurukulam is dedicated to preserving and transmitting the Vedas, Śāstras and the principles of Sanātana Dharma.
The Gurukulam traces its inspiration to the life and teachings of Pujya Sri Sirugamani Parashuramacharya and the Vedic lineage nurtured by Nitya Agnihotri Somayaji Vajapeyaji Sirugamani Sri Padmanabha Acharya.
Its Srirangapatna branch was inaugurated on 3 May 2024 with the blessings of His Holiness Sri Sri 1008 Sri VidyaShreesha Teertha Swamiji of Sosale Sri Vyasaraja Matha and His Holiness Sri Sri 1008 Sri VishwaVallabha Teertha Swamiji of Sode Sri Vadiraja Matha.
Across its branches, the institution teaches Ghanapāṭha, Nyāya, Vyākaraṇa, Mīmāṁsā Śāstra and Dvaita Vedānta, while also providing general school education to its vidyārthis. Its purpose extends beyond academic instruction: it seeks to nurture Vedic scholars who can preserve, practise and teach the Vedas and Śāstras with dignity. To stand among children who have dedicated their formative years to Vedic learning was itself a humbling experience. Their discipline, simplicity and commitment silently reminded us that the protection of Dharma depends upon those willing to learn it, those willing to teach it—and those willing to support both.
A Small Offering to Thirty Vidyārthis
Educational kits were offered to thirty vidyārthis of the Gurukulam. Each kit included:
- A school bag
- A button file for preserving test papers
- A two-line notebook
- Pencils, an eraser and a sharpener
- A pouch for the stationery
- A pen
- A writing pad
For the Gurukulam’s office and administrative needs, large and small stapler machines, together with stapler pins, were also offered.
Each item may appear ordinary when viewed by itself. Yet when placed in the hands of a student, a notebook becomes a space for learning, a pencil becomes an instrument of Vidyā, and a school bag becomes a companion in a child’s educational journey.
The value of Dāna is not determined by the grandeur of what is given. Its sanctity lies in the purpose it serves and the śraddhā with which it is offered.
Dāna Offered with Śraddhā
The Bhagavad Gītā describes sāttvika dāna:
दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे ।
देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम् ॥Dātavyam iti yad dānaṁ dīyate’nupakāriṇe,
deśe kāle ca pātre ca tad dānaṁ sāttvikaṁ smṛtam.
“That gift which is given with the conviction that it ought to be given, at the proper place and time, to a worthy recipient, without expectation of anything in return, is remembered as sāttvika dāna.”
— Bhagavad Gītā 17.20
This visit allowed us to experience that teaching in a deeply personal way.
The offering was made possible by the Donors of the Trust, each of whom contributed according to their capacity. Though their offerings may have reached the Trust through different paths, they came together as one collective act of satkarma.
Each contribution was offered willingly and with goodwill. Before Sri Hari, the true worth of Dāna lies not in its monetary value, but in the śraddhā, sincerity and selfless intention with which it is offered.
Seva Across Generations
The Trust was represented by its Managing Trustees, Astrologer Vrushabam Sathyanarayanan and Smt. Vijayalakshmi, accompanied by their children, Mithun Bharadwaj and Uthara.
The presence of the family elders, Shri Lakshmikantha and Shrimathi Padma, made the occasion especially meaningful and brought their blessings to this collective act of Dāna and Seva.
When children witness their parents and grandparents participating in Dāna, they learn something that cannot be taught through words alone. They understand that giving is not an occasional activity—it is a way of life handed from one generation to the next.
Dharma survives when it is lived within families.
For Mithun and Uthara, the visit was an opportunity to meet the young vidyārthis, participate in the offering and experience the traditional Gurukula environment. Such encounters gently plant the understanding that whatever Sri Hari places in our hands carries with it a responsibility towards others.
The Happiness That Remained with Us
The most memorable part of the visit was not the number of kits distributed or the list of materials offered.
It was the happiness on the faces of the vidyārthis.
As the children received and opened their kits, their joy filled the hall. Their smiles transformed a simple act of distribution into something sacred. In that moment, the distinction between giver and receiver seemed to disappear.
We had gone there believing that we were carrying something to offer. We returned feeling that we had received far more—the joy of the children, the blessings of a Vedic environment and a renewed understanding of why Dāna forms an inseparable part of Dharma.
Perhaps this is one of the quiet mysteries of Seva: when performed without expectation, the heart of the giver is also purified and nourished.
Every Donor Was Present in Spirit
Not every donor could be physically present at the Gurukulam. Yet every contribution accompanied us.
Every school bag carried someone’s goodwill. Every notebook contained an unseen prayer. Every pencil represented a person who chose to direct a portion of their resources towards a dhārmic purpose.
Therefore, the merit of this satkarma belongs collectively to all the Donors of the Trust who made the offering possible.
From our hearts, we pray:
May Sri Hari graciously accept this humble act of Seva.
May Mukhyaprāṇa guide us towards further opportunities to serve.
May Mahālakṣmī shower Her compassionate kaṭākṣa upon every donor and their family—not merely through material prosperity, but through health, harmony, knowledge, contentment, devotion and the continuing capacity to support Dharma.
May the vidyārthis of Sri Trayee Vidya Gurukulam grow into learned and compassionate protectors of the Vedas and Śāstras.
May their learning illuminate generations yet to come.
From Dhana to Dharma
Dhana held only for ourselves remains a possession.
Dhana directed towards a righteous purpose becomes Dāna.
Dāna offered with śraddhā becomes Seva.
And Seva offered to Sri Hari becomes part of our journey towards Dharma.
Our visit to Sri Trayee Vidya Gurukulam was a small step in that continuing journey—a reminder that wealth finds its highest meaning when it supports Vidyā, sustains tradition and brings happiness to another life.
As we continue together through the Dhana–Dharma Yātrā, may we remain attentive to every opportunity Sri Hari gives us to transform what we possess into something that serves His world.
The Seva Continues
We were deeply overwhelmed by—and sincerely grateful for—the generous response from the Donors of the Trust. Every contribution, irrespective of its size, helped transform this intention into a meaningful offering for the vidyārthis.
At the same time, the visit left us with a strong desire to do more for Sri Trayee Vidya Gurukulam.
We have now begun exploring and organising support towards the Gurukulam’s recurring monthly grocery requirements. We are grateful that a few donors have already come forward with initial contributions towards this proposed seva.
The initiative is still being thoughtfully planned in consultation with the Gurukulam so that any support extended remains purposeful, transparent and aligned with their actual needs.
What began with school bags and stationery has therefore opened the way for a longer journey of Seva. With Sri Hari’s grace and the continued goodwill of the Donors of the Trust, we pray that this effort may grow steadily and help sustain the vidyārthis and the sacred Vedic education they have undertaken.
May Sri Hari grant us the humility to serve, the wisdom to serve responsibly, and the strength to continue whenever He presents us with an opportunity.
